Spintronics: Future of computing

Spintronics utilizes the spin degree of electron to store and process digital information. Unlike today's digital electronics where a transistor is used to manipulate binary information by passing a charge current from a source terminal to a drain terminal through a gate controlled channel region, in spintronics, a device manipulates information with the direction of spin polarization without creating any motion of charge particle. As a result, the energy dissipation due to the heating when charged particles are in motion is absent in spintronics. Early proposals of spintronic devices [e.g. Data-Das transistor] used spin polarized currents in a transistor like structure.
