Hybrid spintronics-straintronics: A nanomagnetic approach to computing

A two phase multi-ferroic nanomagnet consisting a magnetostrictive nanomgnet on top of a piezoelectric substrate can be utilized for binary computing. The nanomagnet has elliptical shape in which the magnetization/giant spin lies in the plane along the major axis of the ellipse. By applying a voltage across the piezoelectric material, a strain can be generated which should transfer to its adjacent nanomagnet. The nanomagnet's magnetization, thanks to its magnetostrictive property, then rotates and tries to align itself either along the direction of the stress or along the direction perpendicular to the stress axis. One can indeed perform binary operation with this hybrid spintronic/straintronic nanomagnetic device.
